throughout. The line from Newport to Cwmbran closed on 27 October

Newport Railway route. On 3 May 1980 the Big Pit closed, and with it
the remainder of the railway line

Much of the southern section of the route has been lost
beneath road improvements, variously beneath the A4042 and A4051 roads
between Newport Docks and Pontrhydyrun, halfway between Cwmbran and
Pontypool. Only a short section of trackbed remains through
Malpas village and at the Llantarnam
Road Tunnel. Further pictures of the tunnel can be found here.
The trackbed ran over the top of the M4 Brynglas tunnels, just above the portals. |
| The trackbed is followable north from the former crossing at
Bevan's Lane northwards to Pontymoel, near the site of Pontypool
Blaendare Road station, where it again disappears beneath road
development. Much of the pathway has been surfaced and is maintained as
a recreational route. |
|
| Nothing remains of the site of Sebastopol Station, located to
the south of the road overbridge. |
|
| Panteg Engine Shed, located opposite the former steelworks
site, remains as a local museum. The steelworks were demolished
during 2008. A station was provided at the steelworks on the
Pontypool to Newport mainline. This is derelict but the building
remains, albeit decrepit and overgrown. A gallery of Panteg
Steelworks Station is here **Coming soon** |
|
| Panteg Station building remains extant, and is used as the
depot of a builder's company. |
|
| To the north of Panteg, the area adjacent to the trackbed has
been relandscaped, as this are formerly comprised exchange sidings and
the former spur to join the Pontypool to Newport mainline. At the
northern end of the relandscaped are, the trackbed goes over a 'topped'
bridge and subsequently over the Monmouth and Brecon Canal and a
parallel former tramway. A separate footbridge over the canal has
an old style weght limit sign, still in situ. The trackbed can be followed as far as Staffprd Road, where the road takes over the trackbed as far as the site of Blaendare Road Station. A short section of the trackbed is passable to the north of Blaendare Road, along a footbridge over the route of the GWT Taff Vale Extension (Now the A472) towards the site of Crane Street Station, now demolished and replaced with the A4043 road. |
