The trackbed is accessible between Cyrfartha Junction and
Abercanaid. To the south of Abercanaid, the route has been lost
beneath the A470, which follows much of this railway route. The
A470 is built on the trackbed as far as Troedyrhiw. |
| Between Troedyrhiw and Aberfan, the line is generally
accessible except for a short stretch immeditely north of the bridge
over the former Glamorgan Canal. It parallels the Taff Trail at
this point, which follows the route of the former canal. A slight
terrace, following the former railway and canal (they ran parallel) is
visible where the landscape was cleared follwoing the Aberfan
Disaster. A memorial is located nearby. |
|
| The trackbed is traceable as far as the southern end of
Aberfan Village, before disappearing beneath the A470. The
trackbed re-appears to the south of Merthyr Vale for a short distance,
although a parallel footpath exists as far between Merthyr Vale and
Pontygwaith. |
|
| The trackbed is partly follwoable between Pontygwaith and the
former Quaker's Yard viaduct, the path partly on trackbed and partly on
a parallel route, due to land take by the A470. |
|
| The Quaker's Yard viaduct was demolished in 1969 after
becoming unsafe due to mining related subsidence. The line was
originally closed in 1951 due to subdidence related damage to the
viaduct. |
|
| Much of the trackbed (shared with the GWR Pontypool to
Neath Route) throuth Quaker's Yard and Treharris villages has been lost
to developemnt. To the east of Treharris, as far as the junction with
the Taff Bargoed branch forms part of National Cycleway route 47. |
